Of all the Puranas, it is classified as an Adi myth or a primary myth. It is a secondary deity purana and has equal importance with the Vishnu and Shiva main puranas among the 18 major sacred texts. The story starts from Lord Shiva's son Skanda, who was born from his wife Parvati. The chapter 1 of this text refers to Lord Shiva as "Kashyapa" and he mentions that he is one of his sons together with Ganesha, Murugan and Kartikeya. The Skanda purana consists of 18,000 verses composed of two parts; the first deals with the primary deity (Shiva), while the second deals with his son (Skanda). Both parts were authored by different sages during different time periods. It is believed that sage Kapila first wrote this text, and that Vyasa then condensed it into 18,000 verses. The first part of this text has 58 chapters. After Kapila wrote the first part, Vyasa further condensed it to 5000 verses. Later on, sage Durvasa added 1001 verses to it. cfa1e77820
